Circuit description and component location
The coolant level sensor checks the coolant level in the cooling system and informs the ECM through the sensor harness. The sensor is complex, so a multimeter must not be used to test it. The coolant level sensor is located in the radiator top tank or surge tank.
When the coolant level drops a progressive derate cuts engine output by about 50 percent over 30 seconds, and the surge tank must be metal because the sensor will not work with a non-conductive tank; the fault applies to 98 N14 and 98 M11 calibrations. All checks are made with a Cummins service tool such as Compulink, Echek or a diagnostic tool, and inactive codes are cleared once the repair is confirmed.
Applicable truck models and engines
This document applies to Cummins M11 and N14 CELECT Plus (1995-98) electronic engines and is filed under the CELECT Plus diagnostic trouble codes group, so it suits on-highway and industrial installations that run these engines.
