Who needs this Cummins fault code 146 manual
This manual is for mechanics, fleet technicians, and workshop owners diagnosing an amber lamp coolant temperature warning where the ECM sees data valid but above the normal operational range. It is useful when checking whether Fault Codes 144 and 145 are active before moving to the applicable engine coolant temperature symptom tree.
The procedure states that the engine coolant temperature sensor is a variable resistor sensor supplied with 5 volts by the ECM on the coolant temperature signal circuit. The sensor is located on the exhaust side of the engine near the thermostat housing, and the ECM uses the coolant temperature value for engine protection and emissions control. When the coolant temperature exceeds the calibratible engine protection warning limit, the ECM logs the fault immediately, reduces torque output, disables exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve operation, and may allow shutdown if the Engine Protection Shutdown feature is enabled. The fault turns off when coolant temperature decreases below the engine protection limit. The Shop Talk note instructs technicians to verify ECM calibration, review QuickServe® Online calibration revision history for applicable fixes, and recalibrate if necessary by referring to Procedure 019-032 in Section 19.
