CAT ECM time stamp information guide — 3406E C-10 C-12 3176B

The CAT ECM time stamp guide is the section of Caterpillar manual SENR5582-06 that explains how the date and time clock inside certain ECMs records when an event occurred on the 3176B, C-10, C-12 and 3406E truck engines. Used correctly, the time stamp turns a bare event code into a dated record a technician can actually act on.

Which ECMs have the clock — CAT ECM time

Only ECMs with a serial number ending in “CG” or “CJ” carry a date and time clock. This clock indicates month, day, year and time including AM/PM, and it stamps a specific set of diagnostic event codes so the technician knows exactly when each one was captured rather than only that it happened.

Event codes that are stamped — CAT ECM time

The CAT ECM time stamp applies to a defined list of event codes:

  • 84-00 Vehicle Overspeed Warning
  • 84-14 Quick Stop Occurrence
  • 100-11 Very Low Oil Pressure
  • 110-11 Very High Coolant Temperature
  • 111-11 Very Low Coolant Level
  • 190-00 Engine Overspeed Warning

ECM diagnostic snapshots, Set/Resume-triggered snapshots and Quick Stop snapshots are also time stamped, so a snapshot can be tied to the exact moment it was captured.

Before adjusting the clock

Before changing the ECM date/time clock, ask the owner or operator whether they want the stamped information recorded, then clear it before making a large clock change to avoid confusion later. The manual also reminds the technician that the truck may be based in a different time zone than where it is being serviced, so a CAT ECM time stamp should be read with that in mind. Cross-checking the stamped date against the driver’s account of when the fault occurred is often what confirms whether an overspeed or quick-stop event is recent or historic, which in turn decides whether it is worth chasing at all.
