Document table of contents

  • Conditions Which Generate This Code (PID 0190 FMI 02)
  • System Response — ECM failover to secondary speed/timing sensor
  • Possible Performance Effect — engine shutdown risk if secondary signal is also lost
  • Troubleshooting — Test Step 1: Engine Speed/Timing Sensor Circuit – Test

Applicable truck models

This publication applies to Caterpillar on-highway truck engines in the following configurations: 3406E, C-10, and C-12 with serial prefix groups 8YS, 9NS, 5DS, or 1LW. The specific configuration referenced is the C-12 Truck Engine 9NS00001-UP. The fault code PID 0190 FMI 02 is triggered when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that the primary engine speed/timing signal was lost and returned within one second, the engine had been running for more than three seconds, speed did not pass through the 350 to 500 rpm range, and battery voltage exceeded 9 VDC prior to the fault. When this code is active, the ECM switches to the secondary speed/timing sensor and Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) displays “DIAG” next to the Engine Speed status.
