This is a regulatory mandated code that informs the operator an emissions fault has been active longer than a government-specified interval with no corrective action taken. It is not repaired on its own – the technician must find and fix the parent fault.
On EPA10 engines, if SPN 5246/FMI 0, 15 or 16 are the only faults present, the guide directs you to the SPN 3361/FMI 7 procedure (DEF Unit unable to clear restriction). Otherwise it lists the triggering codes, including DEF tank level, SCR inlet and outlet NOx sensors, DEF dosing valve, DEF pressure, air pressure, temperature sensors, SCR inlet and outlet temperature sensors, and the DEF pump.
