Circuit description and component location
The vehicle speed sensor uses two separate coils to count gear teeth as they pass the sensor; one coil feeds the ECM for road speed and the other can feed the OEM speedometer. This is an anti-tampering fault. The vehicle speed sensor is installed in the transmission tail shaft housing.
The VSS Anti-Tampering, Application Type and Automatic Transmission feature settings are verified, because incorrect settings, extended driving in low gears, or repeated keyswitch cycling to defeat the road-speed governor can log this fault. All checks are made with a Cummins service tool such as Compulink, Echek or a diagnostic tool, and inactive codes are cleared once the repair is confirmed.
Applicable truck models and engines
This document applies to Cummins M11 and N14 CELECT Plus (1995-98) electronic engines and is filed under the CELECT Plus diagnostic trouble codes group, so it suits on-highway and industrial installations that run these engines.
