It warns that a camshaft gear mistimed by one tooth early can drive the pistons into the intake valves, while one tooth late can let the exhaust valves contact the pistons, and gives a feeler-gauge method that sets the No. 1 intake valve to 0.029 in with the No. 1 piston at top dead center on the compression stroke before checking timing from the vibration damper pulley notch. Front-cover cautions stress torquing the air-compressor and rear-bracket bolts in the specified sequence and not over-torquing them, to avoid warping or fracturing the front cover.
