PACCAR MX P0016 is the fault code chapter the 2013 PACCAR MX Diagnostic Service Manual publishes for “Camshaft speed signal – Not corresponding with engine position”. The 7-page PDF is PACCAR’s own troubleshooting write-up for EPA2013 MX engines, reproduced exactly as the factory issued it.

What sets PACCAR MX P0016 active
The diagnostic runs during starting, when the engine speed is above 400 rpm. The PCI ECU (D420) sets the code when the camshaft sensor (F558) signal does not correspond to the crankshaft sensor (F552) signal after some engine revolutions. The DTC changes to inactive when the fault is no longer detected, and the repair verification cycle is a two-minute idle with the brakes set.
Component and wiring checks
- PCI ECU connector D420.A pins A53 (camshaft speed signal), A54 (ground) and A57 (shield) to component connector F558 pins 1, 2 and 3
- Camshaft sensor resistance of 774–964 Ω between pins 1 and 2 at 20°C [68°F]
- Effective AC voltage of 0.5 V while cranking, 2.3 V at idle and 8.0 V at 1200 rpm
Possible causes and repair notes
- Faulty or soiled crankshaft sensor (F552) and/or camshaft sensor (F558)
- Air gap too large between the crankshaft sensor and the flywheel
- Air gap too large between the camshaft sensor and the pulse wheel
- Damaged flywheel and/or pulse wheel
The manual notes that engine torque is reduced while the code is active, that the crankshaft sensor acts as the back-up for starting, and that related code P0017 should be investigated first. The DAVIE monitor Fuel Release Control When Starting is used to see whether the cam-crank signal reports as synchronized. Company and product background is on the official PACCAR website.
Who needs this PACCAR MX P0016 chapter
Heavy-duty diesel technicians and fleet shops reach for PACCAR MX P0016 when the code lands on a DAVIE scan and the repair has to follow the factory sequence instead of guesswork.
