ZF transmissions sit behind diesel engines in trucks, buses, coaches and vocational chassis all over the world, and none of them can be properly diagnosed with a generic OBD scanner. The manufacturer’s own software is ZF Testman (also written ZF-Testman Pro), and it is what lets a workshop talk directly to the transmission control unit instead of guessing at a shift complaint. The build we supply is version 10.5.
What ZF Testman actually is
Testman is a transmission-side diagnostic application. It is not an engine tool and not a whole-vehicle scanner. It connects to the transmission ECU and lets you read and clear fault codes with ZF-specific descriptions, view live data, run component and actuator tests, edit parameters, and carry out the teach-in routines ZF specifies after a repair.
One boundary is worth stating up front, because it is where a lot of buyers get a surprise: full ECU flashing and dealer-level reprogramming are the domain of ZF’s newer ZF Scan platform, not Testman. Testman covers diagnosis, testing, parameterisation and teach-in, which is the large majority of what an independent truck or bus shop needs day to day, but it is not a flashing suite.

What it does on the vehicle
Fault codes and live data
Read and clear active and stored transmission faults with ZF’s own descriptions rather than a generic SAE translation, and watch live values while the vehicle is running. Testman also includes integrated pressure and temperature measurement, so you can follow a hydraulic or thermal complaint with real numbers instead of inference.
Component and clutch tests
Actuator and component tests let you command individual solenoids, valves and clutch elements and confirm whether the fault is in the unit, the wiring or the control side. On an automated manual, being able to drive the clutch actuator directly is often the fastest way to separate a mechanical problem from an electrical one.
Teach-in and reset routines
This is the part that decides whether a repair actually finishes. After a clutch replacement on an AS-Tronic or TraXon unit, the transmission needs a clutch touch-point teach-in so the control unit knows where engagement begins; skip it and you get poor shift quality or a vehicle that will not move off cleanly. Testman also runs the broader transmission teach-in and the reset routines a gearbox repair calls for. Note the terminology: ZF says teach-in and parameterisation, not “calibration”, and matching that language makes the menus far easier to follow.
Parameters and control unit replacement
You can view and set transmission parameters so the unit matches the vehicle and its application, run a function-lock query to see what is enabled on a given ECU, and copy vehicle data across to a replacement control unit when a TCU has to be changed. That last function alone saves a great deal of time on a unit swap.
Transmission coverage
Confirmed Testman coverage includes the following ZF families, which between them account for most ZF-equipped on-highway trucks, buses and vocational vehicles:

PowerLine, ZF’s newer 8-speed (8AP) medium-duty automatic, is a separate and much more recent family. If PowerLine is what you are working on, confirm coverage for your specific model and model year before you buy rather than assuming it is included.
Interface and system requirements
Software alone will not get you onto the vehicle. Testman runs with the DPA06 interface, which links to the laptop over Bluetooth, plus the cable set appropriate to the transmission family you are working on. It can also be used with ZF’s newer DCI interface. Budget for the adapter and the correct cables as part of the job, not as an afterthought.
On the PC side, the version listed here runs on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Older Testman builds were released for Windows 7 and 8 as well, but if you are specifying a new shop laptop, a clean Windows 10 or 11 machine is the sensible choice.
Editions and licensing
Testman ships in more than one edition: IAM (independent aftermarket), CV for commercial vehicles and PC for passenger cars. For trucks, buses and vocational equipment, the CV/IAM edition is the relevant one, and it is worth confirming which edition you are getting before purchase because it scopes what you can actually access.
Licensing is time-limited rather than perpetual. ZF’s standard arrangement is a one-year licence with online renewal; the version listed on our product page carries a two-year licence. Either way, plan for renewal as a recurring workshop cost, the same way you would with any other manufacturer-level diagnostic subscription.
Testman or ZF Scan?
ZF Scan is the next-generation platform. It brings Testman’s transmission diagnostics together with WABCO diagnostics in one environment and adds ECU flashing, and it is backward-compatible with the DPA06 interface, so hardware you buy now is not stranded. Testman remains the established, widely used tool for transmission diagnosis, testing and teach-in. If your work is gearbox diagnosis and repair completion, Testman does that job; if you need flashing and combined chassis coverage, ZF Scan is the direction to look.
