Circuit description and component location
The oil temperature sensor monitors oil temperature and passes the information to the ECM through the sensor harness. This code trips the engine protection system when oil temperature becomes too high, which can force a derate or shutdown. On the M11 the oil temperature sensor is on the engine block behind the ECM; on the N14 it is in the lubricating pump housing.
Both the oil and coolant sides of the oil cooler are checked for high restriction, the oil cooler thermostat is confirmed to be working, and the fault applies to 98 N14 and 98 M11 calibrations only. All checks are made with a Cummins service tool such as Compulink, Echek or a diagnostic tool, and inactive codes are cleared once the repair is confirmed.
