Circuit description and component location
The oil temperature sensor monitors oil temperature and passes the information to the ECM through the sensor harness. This FMI 3 code points to a high-signal or open condition, and high oil temperature with engine protection enabled can force a derate. On the M11 the oil temperature sensor is on the engine block behind the ECM; on the N14 it is in the lubricating oil pump housing.
The sensor harness connector pins are flushed with electronic contact cleaner and inspected, and sensor resistance is compared against the table that runs from about 30k to 36k ohms at 0 C down to 600 to 675 ohms at 100 C. All checks are made with a Cummins service tool such as Compulink, Echek or a diagnostic tool, and inactive codes are cleared once the repair is confirmed.
