PACCAR MX P101E — BPV actuator position unable to reach target

PACCAR MX P101E is the diagnostic trouble code documented on this 11 pages extract from the 2013 PACCAR MX Diagnostic Service Manual, published by PACCAR for EPA2013 MX engines. PACCAR prints the fault as “BPV actuator position – Unable to reach target position”, in the manual’s standard fault code layout.

Component and system background

The back pressure valve (BPV) actuator (L096) consists of an actuator and a BPV valve whose main task is to create back pressure in the exhaust system and control exhaust gas mass flow. The actuator carries its own ECU, electromotor, output shaft, electromotor and output shaft position sensors and a printed circuit board temperature sensor, and it talks to the PCI ECU over E-CAN.

Set and reset conditions for PACCAR MX P101E

The code is set when the BPV valve detects a difference between the actual shaft position and the target position. It goes inactive after the ignition has been off for at least 15 seconds and is keyed on again without the fault. Listed causes include a bent actuator lever or connection rod and a sticking or blocked BPV valve or mechanism. With this fault active the actuator motor is switched off and the valve stays fully open at the 100 percent position. Repair verification starts with the DAVIE Quick Check function.

Applies to EPA2013 MX engines

The PACCAR MX P101E entry sits in the DTCs / MX Engines (EPA2013) section, so it applies to PACCAR MX engines built to that emissions level. Manufacturer product information is published on the PACCAR corporate website.

Who needs the PACCAR MX P101E fault code page

Technicians reading a live code, foremen writing an estimate and fleet managers deciding whether a truck stays in service all need the manufacturer wording rather than a generic code list.
