How the turbocharger works
This chapter applies to International DT466 and DT530 engines of the 2000-2003 range. It describes the unit as an exhaust-driven centrifugal air compressor with an oil- and air-cooled center housing and sleeve-type bearings lubricated by engine oil, with the turbine shaft driven to speeds over 100,000 rpm to raise intake-manifold pressure for more power, better fuel efficiency and the ability to hold power at altitude. Oil is fed from the clean-oil side of the filter through the feed tube, circulated in the center housing, and returned through a drain tube. The procedure notes it is the same for wastegate and non-wastegate units except where marked, and warns that reorienting the compressor housing on the vehicle will damage its O-Ring.
