PACCAR MX P0017 is the fault code chapter the 2013 PACCAR MX Diagnostic Service Manual publishes for “Crankshaft speed signal – Not corresponding with engine position”. The 7-page PDF is PACCAR’s own troubleshooting write-up for EPA2013 MX engines, reproduced exactly as the factory issued it.

What sets PACCAR MX P0017 active
The diagnostic runs during starting, when the engine speed is above 400 rpm. The PCI ECU (D420) sets the code when the crankshaft sensor (F552) signal does not correspond to the camshaft sensor (F558) signal after some engine revolutions. The DTC changes to inactive when the fault is no longer detected, and the repair verification cycle is a two-minute idle with the brakes set.
Component and wiring checks
- PCI ECU connector D420.A pins A55 (ground), A54 (crankshaft speed signal) and A59 (shield) to component connector F552 pins 1, 2 and 3
- Crankshaft sensor resistance of 774–964 Ω between pins 1 and 2 at 20°C [68°F]
- Effective AC voltage of 0.5 V while cranking, 2.3 V at idle and 8.0 V at 1200 rpm
Possible causes and repair notes
- Interruption or short circuit to ground on pin A56 of the ECU
- Interruption on pin A55 of the ECU
- Faulty or soiled crankshaft sensor (F552) and/or camshaft sensor (F558)
- Air gap too large between the crankshaft sensor and the flywheel, or between the camshaft sensor and the pulse wheel
The manual notes that engine torque is reduced while the code is active and that the camshaft sensor is used as the back-up to start the engine. Fault isolation is worked in the printed sequence, with a DAVIE Quick Check after every corrective action. Company and product background is on the official PACCAR website.
Who needs this PACCAR MX P0017 chapter
Heavy-duty diesel technicians and fleet shops reach for PACCAR MX P0017 when the code lands on a DAVIE scan and the repair has to follow the factory sequence instead of guesswork.
