PACCAR MX P102F — BPV actuator temperature, data erratic — MX

PACCAR MX P102F is the diagnostic trouble code documented on this 5 pages extract from the 2013 PACCAR MX Diagnostic Service Manual, published by PACCAR for EPA2013 MX engines. PACCAR prints the fault as “BPV actuator temperature – Data erratic, intermittent or incorrect at ignition on”, in the manual’s standard fault code layout.

Fault code summary and monitor data

The manual lists 2 trip MIL with 3 drive cycle recovery, no readiness group and a generic freeze frame type. The diagnostic runs when the ignition is switched on with no engine start.

Component and system background

The BPV actuator is a smart actuator on E-CAN with its own ECU, electromotor, output shaft, position sensors and a temperature sensor that monitors the printed circuit board. That board temperature is the signal this code watches, and it is compared against the other temperature sensors on the engine after a long soak.

Set and reset conditions for PACCAR MX P102F

The code is set when the PCI ECU (D420) detects that the actuator temperature from the BPV actuator (L096) differs by more than 3 C from the average of the other engine temperature sensors for more than 5 seconds. Reset runs as an 8 hour ignition off diagnostic in three steps, with the vehicle left untouched for 8 to 10 consecutive hours. The listed possible cause is a faulty BPV actuator (L096). Validation is done with the brakes set, key ON, engine off and 10 seconds for the system to initialise.

Applies to EPA2013 MX engines

The PACCAR MX P102F entry sits in the DTCs / MX Engines (EPA2013) section, so it applies to PACCAR MX engines built to that emissions level. Manufacturer product information is published on the PACCAR corporate website.

Who needs the PACCAR MX P102F fault code page

Technicians reading a live code, foremen writing an estimate and fleet managers deciding whether a truck stays in service all need the manufacturer wording rather than a generic code list.
