Inside the LoneStar hydraulic clutch manual
- Hydraulic clutch system description
- Reservoir and clutch master cylinder service
- Air assist servo/slave cylinder removal and installation
- Reverse pressure and pressure bleeding procedures
- Diagnosis and troubleshooting table
- Fluid specifications and torque chart
Copyrighted by Navistar in 2011, the section describes the clutch pedal, master cylinder, reservoir, air-assist servo and slave cylinder, hydraulic hose and bleeder valve, and stresses that only approved DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid may be used and never mixed with other fluids. Repeated warnings cover eye protection and protecting painted surfaces from spilled fluid. Remove-and-install procedures address the reservoir, master cylinder, air assist servo and slave cylinder, and pedal with figure callouts. Two bleeding methods are provided, a reverse-pressure procedure and a standard pressure-bleeding procedure that fills the circuit while keeping the supply tank topped up, followed by pumping the pedal to release trapped air. A troubleshooting table links slippage and low pedal effort to release-bearing, disc, pushrod and master-cylinder causes, and the closing chart lists fluid capacity and torque values.
Applicable truck models
The system uses DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid with a reservoir capacity of about 0.49 liters (16.6 ounces). Torque values include 15 to 18 lb-ft on the master cylinder mount and 11 to 15 lb-ft on the air assist servo bolts. Verify coverage against your VIN and build sheet on the International Trucks website.
Who needs the LoneStar hydraulic clutch manual
Clutch technicians use this manual to bleed the air-assisted system correctly, adjust master-cylinder pushrod, and diagnose clutch slippage or low pedal effort on ProStar+ and LoneStar tractors.
