Applicable truck models
This file applies to Cummins CM2250 engine platforms named in the extract: ISB6.7 CM2250, ISC8.3 and ISL9 CM2250, ISX11.9 CM2250, and ISX15 CM2250. The component location depends on the vehicle OEM because the diesel exhaust fluid tank heater control valve is located near the DEF tank, and the tank heating coil is internal to the diesel exhaust fluid tank. For manufacturer information, visit the Cummins official website.
Who needs this fault code 1713 DTCs manual
This manual is for diesel mechanics, fleet technicians, and workshop owners diagnosing an amber CHECK ENGINE lamp or MIL related to SPN 3363 FMI 16. It is useful when the DEF tank heater is reported as continuously ON, when the fault is inactive on arrival, or when a stuck-open, reversed, or malfunctioning tank heater control valve is suspected.
The procedure directs technicians to read related diesel exhaust fluid tank heater or tank temperature sensor fault codes with INSITE™ electronic service tool, including Fault Code 1677, 1678, 1679, 1683, 1684, or 3576. It then checks coolant plumbing for leaks, damage, kinks, restrictions, loose connections, leaking seals, and gasket issues. It also verifies engine coolant level, confirms the control valve is not reversed relative to coolant flow direction, and uses the “Diesel Exhaust Fluid Doser System Heater Test” under “ECM Diagnostic Tests” to confirm valve operation.
The later pages cover calibration and closeout work. The technician compares the ECM code and revision number against ECM Calibration Revision History for applicable changes, then calibrates the ECM if required by Procedure 019-032 in the associated procedures table. The repair is validated by operating the engine under the clearing conditions, checking that the fault code becomes inactive, and returning to the troubleshooting steps or a Cummins® Authorized Repair Location if the code remains active.
