Circuit description and component location
The injector solenoid valves are actuated by the ECM to control fuel metering and timing. Each solenoid is connected to the ECM by a supply wire and a return wire and is normally open, closing only on an electrical pulse from the ECM during injection. On the N14 an external actuator harness runs from the C connector port in the ECM along the left side of the rocker boxes to the pass-thru connectors, where the injector pigtail connectors attach.
Troubleshooting inspects the actuator harness and 28-pin ECM connector for bent, corroded or pushed-back pins, then measures resistance from pin 1 and pin 10 to every other pin looking for more than 100k ohms before the ECM is replaced. All checks are made with a Cummins service tool such as Compulink, Echek or a diagnostic tool, and inactive codes are cleared once the repair is confirmed.
