Applicable truck models

This document applies to the Caterpillar C15 On-Highway Truck Engine, configuration MXS00001-UP. The procedures address the Engine Control Module (ECM) and its interaction with OEM-installed coolant level sensors. Workshops servicing Class 8 trucks equipped with C15 MXS, NKS, or RKS engines will find these diagnostics relevant. When the ECM detects a very low coolant level for more than 30 seconds, it derates engine power by 35 percent and limits vehicle speed to 72 km/h (45 mph). If Engine Monitoring is programmed to Shutdown, the engine shuts down after 30 seconds of active fault. Factory passwords are required to clear the diagnostic code. Who needs this CAT C15 111-11 troubleshooting manual

Diesel mechanics, fleet maintenance technicians, and workshop owners working on CAT C15-powered trucks need this manual to diagnose coolant level sensor faults, verify ECM connector wiring integrity, and restore full engine power after derate events. Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET) software is required to execute several test steps described in this document.
