Applicable truck models
This PDF applies to Cummins ISB, ISC, and ISL engines with CM2150 control systems where adaptive cruise control communicates with the electronic control module through the SAE J1939 data link. The component location varies by original equipment manufacturer, so the document directs the technician to the OEM troubleshooting and repair manual for vehicle-specific adaptive cruise control unit location and J1939 network details. For official manufacturer information, visit Cummins.
Who needs this code 784 DTCs manual
This manual is for diesel mechanics, fleet technicians, and workshop owners diagnosing loss of communication with adaptive cruise control. It is useful when the ECM does not receive a valid J1939 Heartbeat message from the adaptive cruise control module for more than 1 second and the fault becomes active.
The procedure starts by confirming whether adaptive cruise control hardware is installed on the vehicle. If the hardware is not installed, the document directs the technician to use INSITE™ electronic service tool to disable the Adaptive Cruise feature. If hardware is present, the next checks verify ECM communication through the INLINE™ II data link adapter, inspect the OEM harness and ECM connector pins, and compare communication using an ECM bench calibration harness.
The connector inspection section lists common physical faults such as loose connectors, corroded pins, bent or broken pins, pushed back or expanded pins, moisture, damaged connector seals, dirt, wire insulation damage, broken connector shells, and damaged locking tabs. The repair path includes cleaning connector pins, repairing damaged harness parts where possible, or referring to OEM troubleshooting when the SAE J1939 circuit or vehicle devices require further diagnosis.
For clearing, the code 784 DTCs procedure reconnects all components, uses INSITE™ electronic service tool, starts the engine and lets it idle for 1 minute, verifies that the fault code is inactive, then clears inactive fault codes.
