Circuit description and component location
In Industrial CELECT Plus the vehicle speed sensor communicates with the ECM over the J1939 datalink, and the vehicle electronic control unit sends vehicle speed to the ECM to control the engine. This code covers loss of that J1939 speed message. The ECM is on the intake side of the engine near the front, while the J1939 datalink wiring and the VSS device vary by OEM.
The fault sets by itself at key-on when the ECM does not detect a J1939 vehicle speed sensor; common causes include unplugging a service tool before keying off and an intermittent electrical problem on the J1939 datalink. All checks are made with a Cummins service tool such as Compulink, Echek or a diagnostic tool, and inactive codes are cleared once the repair is confirmed.
Applicable truck models and engines
This document applies to Cummins M11 and N14 CELECT Plus (1995-98) electronic engines and is filed under the CELECT Plus diagnostic trouble codes group, so it suits on-highway and industrial installations that run these engines. For engine specifications and dealer support, see the official Cummins support site at the Cummins engine support portal.
