This Navistar Pack guide covers what the software actually is, how to install and activate it, and how to fix the connection and licensing problems technicians hit most often. What the Navistar Pack Actually Includes
“Navistar Pack” is a bundle label, not a single program. Knowing the individual tools inside it is the difference between buying the right thing and being stuck at the truck.
- Navistar Engine Diagnostics (NED / NEDS) — the main diagnostic application. This is the program formerly called ServiceMaxx; Navistar renamed it to Navistar Engine Diagnostics in February 2017. It reads and clears fault codes, streams live data, and runs actuator and service tests on International electronic engines and their aftertreatment systems.
- ServiceMaxx J1708 — the legacy diagnostic tool kept for 2006-and-older engines that communicate over SAE J1708.
- NavKal / NavKal Pro — the ECM programming and calibration side. NavKal handles ECM programming; NavKal Pro extends that for shops needing broader reprogramming.
- Diamond Logic Builder — used for International’s Diamond Logic body and chassis electrical multiplexing, not engine work.
Engine and Model Coverage
Coverage follows the diagnostic tool, not a generic vehicle list:
- NED covers International electronic engine systems on the J1939 databus, model year 2007 to current.
- ServiceMaxx J1708 covers 2006 and older engines.
- Supported engines include MaxxForce and the current International A26 and N13, across truck series such as LT, RH, HV, HX and MV, plus IC Bus.
One point to be clear about: the Navistar Pack is dedicated to Navistar / International and IC Bus vehicles. It is not an all-makes tool. If your bay also sees Cummins, Detroit or PACCAR trucks, those engines need their own software — the Navistar Pack will not diagnose them.
What It Does Not Include
Some descriptions of this pack promise service manuals, wiring diagrams and parts catalogs. Those are not part of the diagnostic software. That repair and service documentation comes from Navistar’s separate OnCommand Service Information subscription (formerly ISIS). Treat the Navistar Pack as diagnostics and ECM programming — not a repair-information library.
System Requirements and Interface Hardware
The software is Windows-based and modest in size.
- Operating system: Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Footprint: a download of roughly 300 MB, expanding to about 1 GB once installed.
The part that is easy to overlook is the adapter. NED and NavKal talk to the truck through an RP1210A-compatible interface that supports SAE J1708 and/or J1939 — a generic cable will not communicate with the ECM. Commonly used options are the Nexiq USB-Link 2 or USB-Link 3, the DrewLinQ (frequently recommended for NED), and the DPA5. The adapter connects to the laptop over USB or Wi-Fi, and its RP1210 driver must be installed before the software will see it.
Installing and Activating the Software
Setup has three parts that people tend to blur together: installing the application, installing the adapter’s RP1210 driver, and activating the license. Doing them in that order heads off most “it won’t connect” problems.
Activation is tied to a product key, and the license model matters here. NED and NavKal Pro are sold as annual product-key subscriptions that must be renewed each year — if the key lapses, the software stops working until it is renewed. By contrast, the HeRo health-report tool is a perpetual license. When you enter your product key, type it exactly as issued; a single transposed character is the most common reason activation fails.
Troubleshooting the Problems That Actually Come Up
NED Does Not See the Adapter
If NED launches but reports no device, the fix is almost always in the RP1210 device selection rather than the truck. Confirm the adapter’s RP1210 driver is installed, then open the connection settings and select the correct RP1210 device — the specific Nexiq USB-Link, DrewLinQ or DPA5 entry — instead of leaving it on a default. Reseat the USB cable or re-establish the Wi-Fi link, and make sure only one instance of the software is trying to hold the adapter.
Wrong or Missing Protocol (J1708 vs J1939)
Older International engines (2006 and earlier) talk over J1708, while 2007-and-newer engines use J1939. If the software reaches the adapter but never reaches the ECM, check that you are using the right tool for the engine year — ServiceMaxx J1708 for the older trucks, NED for J1939 — and that the adapter’s driver exposes the protocol that engine needs.
License or Subscription Not Working
If a key that worked before suddenly fails, check whether the annual subscription has expired rather than assuming the software is broken. Confirm the key belongs to the specific program you are launching — an NED key will not activate NavKal — and re-enter it carefully.
A Programming Function Is Blocked
Some operations are restricted by design. Within NavKal Pro, emission-related changes, horsepower upgrades, engine-replacement programming and serial-number updates are limited to authorized International / IC Bus dealers. If one of these is unavailable to you, it is a permissions boundary, not an installation fault — worth knowing before you buy.
