This fault illuminates the CEL and reports a short to ground in the variable-speed water pump circuit. Diagnosis starts by warming the engine until coolant temperature is above 71 degrees C (160 degrees F) to see whether the fault is active.
The technician runs the Variable Speed Water Pump service routine to compare desired versus actual pump speed, cycling the ignition between attempts.
