SPN 1636 FMI 3 — Intake Manifold Temperature Circuit Failed High

SPN 1636 FMI 3 is the Detroit code for the intake manifold temperature circuit failed high, and this sheet gives the voltage checks and Motor Control Module (MCM) pin targets that isolate it. Work it before replacing the pressure/temperature sensor.

Document table of contents

  • Fault header: SPN 1636 / FMI 3 — intake manifold temperature circuit failed high
  • Step 1 — check for companion code SPN 2630/FMI 3
  • Steps 2-5 — read pins 1 and 2, isolate wire faults to MCM pins 52 and 106
  • Step 6 — short-to-power and open checks at MCM pins 106, 119 and 52

SPN 1636 FMI 3 troubleshooting steps

Step 1 checks whether SPN 1636/FMI 3 and SPN 2630/FMI 3 are both present. With only 1636/3, you disconnect the intake manifold pressure/temperature sensor, key on, and read pins 1 and 2: 2.8-3.0 volts condemns the sensor, and under 2.8 volts sends you to pin-2-to-ground checks that isolate an open to Motor Control Module (MCM) pin 52 or pin 106. If both codes are present, Step 6 reads pins 1 and 2 again — over 3 volts is a short to power on MCM pin 106 or 119, and no voltage is an open to MCM pin 52.

Applicable truck models

This procedure covers Detroit DD-series engines — DD13, DD15 and DD16 on the EPA 2007-current platform — and shares its SPN/FMI structure with related Series 60 DDEC VI applications. A 25% derate can accompany this code, so confirm the emissions calibration (EPA07, EPA10 or GHG14) before probing. For engine serial-number and calibration confirmation, use the Detroit Diesel official support site.

Who needs the SPN 1636 FMI 3 manual

Diesel technicians use this sheet to test the intake manifold pressure/temperature sensor circuit, read the MCM connector pins, and separate a wiring short or open from a failed sensor before parts are ordered.
