SPN 1636 FMI 20 is the Detroit code for intake manifold temperature drift (low box), and this sheet gives the voltage checks and Motor Control Module (MCM) pin targets that isolate it. Work it before replacing the pressure/temperature sensor.

- Fault header: SPN 1636 / FMI 20 — intake manifold temperature drift (low box)
- Step 1-2 — key on, read pins 1 and 2 (2.75-3.0 V)
- Step 3 — isolate wire faults to MCM pins 106 and 52
SPN 1636 FMI 20 troubleshooting steps
With the ignition on, Step 2 measures voltage between pins 1 and 2 of the intake manifold temperature sensor harness connector. A reading of 2.75-3.0 volts condemns the intake manifold pressure/temperature sensor. If it is under 2.75 volts, Step 3 measures pin 2 to ground: under 2.75 volts is an open wire to pin 106 of the Motor Control Module (MCM) 120-pin connector, while 2.75-3.0 volts points to a wire fault on pin 1 to MCM pin 52. The sheet keeps the whole diagnosis on the sensor and its two signal wires.
Applicable truck models
This procedure covers Detroit DD-series engines — DD13, DD15 and DD16 on the EPA 2007-current platform — and shares its SPN/FMI structure with related Series 60 DDEC VI applications. A 25% derate can accompany this code, so confirm the emissions calibration (EPA07, EPA10 or GHG14) before probing. For engine serial-number and calibration confirmation, use the Detroit Diesel official support site.
Who needs the SPN 1636 FMI 20 manual
Diesel technicians use this sheet to test the intake manifold pressure/temperature sensor circuit, read the MCM connector pins, and separate a wiring short or open from a failed sensor before parts are ordered.
