Changing a personality module is the Caterpillar procedure in manual SENR5582-06 for updating the software chip that defines how a 3176B, C-10, C-12 or 3406E engine behaves. Whether the change is made by flash programming or by physically swapping the chip, it often brings new parameters or parameter options that were not previously available to the engine.
What happens to parameters — changing a personality
When the new module is installed, any new parameters are set to their default values. Those defaults are usually chosen so the feature is off or unused, and some new parameters may require wiring changes before they become effective. Changing a personality module can therefore alter what the engine is capable of, not just its power rating, so the technician needs to review the new options and set them deliberately afterwards.
Important serial-number caution — changing a personality
For ECMs with a serial number ending in “CG” or “CJ”, the personality module must be dated JUN95 or later to ensure proper engine operation. Fitting an older module to these ECMs can cause problems, so the date printed on the module should be checked before installation.
Before you begin
The manual lists steps to take before changing a personality module so that useful data is not lost:
- Review any snapshots first, because they are cleared when the new module is installed
- If replacing the chip, ask the owner or operator whether they want the trip data recorded
- Record customer parameters so they can be reprogrammed to the same values
Why the order matters
Following these steps keeps the update predictable and preserves the snapshot and trip data a technician may need later to confirm the repair. Because the new parameters land at safe defaults, the engine will not suddenly behave differently until they are set on purpose. This procedure is part of the SENR5582-06 set, dated 01/07/1998 and updated 08/09/2002. Caterpillar information is at the Caterpillar website. Related sections are in the DiagTechPro manuals library.
