SPN 1761 FMI 3 — DEF Tank Level Sensor Circuit Failed High – PDF

SPN 1761 FMI 3 is the Detroit code raised when the DEF tank level sender reads a circuit failed high on the aftertreatment system, and this sheet walks the harness and Aftertreatment Control Module (ACM/ACM2.1) checks that isolate it. Follow it before replacing the sender.

SPN 1761 FMI 3 troubleshooting steps

Step 1 checks for the companion codes SPN 1761/3 and 3031/3. The pin-2 branch reads voltage against ground: any voltage present is a short to power toward Aftertreatment Control Module (ACM) pin 102, and a resistance above 5 ohms between pin 2 and ACM pin 102 is a broken wire; otherwise the sender is replaced per OEM literature. The pin-1 branch reads voltage against ground with the key on: above 3.00 volts is a short to power at ACM pin 109, 2.0-2.95 volts calls for sender replacement, and under 2.5 volts is an open wire to ACM pin 109.

Applicable truck models

This procedure covers Detroit DD-series engines — DD13, DD15 and DD16 on the EPA 2007-current platform with SCR aftertreatment — and shares its SPN/FMI structure with related Series 60 DDEC VI applications. Confirm the emissions calibration (EPA07, EPA10 or GHG14) before probing any pin. For engine serial-number and calibration confirmation, use the Detroit Diesel official support site.

Who needs the SPN 1761 FMI 3 manual

Diesel technicians and aftertreatment specialists use this sheet to test the DEF tank temperature/level sender wiring, distinguish a short or open from a failed sender, and identify the exact ACM pins before ordering parts.
