Navistar NED Software: Engine Coverage & Requirements

NAVISTAR NED

Navistar Engine Diagnostics (NED) is Navistar’s factory engine diagnostic software for its own J1939 engines — the tool used for dealer-level engine work on MaxxForce, N-series and A26 power in International trucks and IC buses. It replaced ServiceMaxx in February 2017, so if you have been searching for a ServiceMaxx license, NED is the current version of that tool. One thing to be clear about up front: NED is an engine tool. Chassis and body electrical work belongs to Diamond Logic Builder, and Navistar’s newest 2017MY-and-later platforms are handled by its SDS software. Here is exactly what NED does, which engines it reaches, and what you need to run it.

What NED does in the service bay

NED talks directly to the engine ECM and gives you the depth a generic scan tool cannot:

  • Read and clear active and stored faults with Navistar-specific descriptions and freeze-frame data, so a code becomes a diagnosis instead of a number
  • Live engine data for confirming a fault before parts go on the truck
  • KOEO and KOER tests, key-on-engine-off and running
  • Injector buzz test and Injector Disable Tests (EPA 04 and newer)
  • Cylinder Cutout Test (EPA 04 and newer) for isolating a weak or dead cylinder
  • Aftertreatment service routines, including regeneration procedures
  • Programmable parameters such as idle shutdown timer, vehicle speed limit, fan control and crank inhibit

Engine and model-year coverage

Coverage is the first thing to verify before you buy. NED covers J1939 Navistar engines across the ProStar, LoneStar, TranStar, DuraStar, WorkStar, PayStar and IC Bus platforms:

Engine family Model years
MaxxForce 5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 13 and MaxxForce DT 2007–2010
N9, N10 and N13 (SCR) 2013–2017
International A26 2017 and newer

Just as important is what NED does not cover:

  • Cummins-powered International trucks — a large share of many fleets — need Cummins’ own software, not NED
  • Trucks with the newer S13 engine are diagnosed with Navistar’s SDS platform
  • Chassis, body and cab electrical systems are Diamond Logic Builder territory

What you need to run NED

Adapter: standard RP1210, no proprietary VCI

NED uses standard RP1210A drivers, so it needs an RP1210A-compliant communication adapter with SAE J1708 and/or SAE J1939 support. Adapters verified by Navistar in the official manual include the Dearborn Group DPA 5, Nexiq USB-Link 1 and 2, and the Noregon DLA family. Two practical notes: the adapter’s device drivers are not installed with NED, so load them separately from the adapter manufacturer, and no J2534 pass-thru box or dealer-only VCI is required.

Laptop and license

Hardware requirements are modest: a 64-bit Windows machine (the current official listing states Windows 11 compatibility), a roughly 1 GHz dual-core processor, 2–4 GB of RAM and about 300 MB of disk space. A high-speed internet connection is required, because NED pulls periodic coverage updates in-app. On licensing, International sells NED by electronic delivery with a product key that is good for one year; keys are not renewed or extended, so budget for a fresh key annually.

NED vs ServiceMaxx, NavKal, DLB and SDS

Is NED the same as ServiceMaxx?

NED is the successor. Navistar Engine Diagnostics replaced ServiceMaxx as of February 2017, and it is what you should be running today on the same engine families ServiceMaxx used to cover.

Do I still need NavKal?

NavKal is Navistar’s ECM programming software: NavKal (Standard) handles calibration updates, and NavKal Pro adds blank-module programming. NED diagnoses; NavKal reflashes. Set expectations correctly, though — certain programming, including emission modifications, horsepower upgrades and engine-replacement programming, remains restricted to authorized International and IC Bus dealers even with NavKal.

Where does Diamond Logic Builder fit?

Diamond Logic Builder (DLB) covers the vehicle side — chassis and body electrical. International itself sells NED, NavKal Pro and DLB together as a software bundle, which tells you these are complementary tools, not overlapping ones.

When do I need SDS instead?

Navistar’s Service Diagnostics Solutions (SDS) supports 2017MY and newer Navistar engines, including the A26, S13 and T14 platforms, with calibration-update programming built in; SDS Professional adds OEM-controlled parameter upgrades and blank module programming. If your work is mostly late-model A26 and S13 trucks, SDS is the platform to look at; for the 2007–2017 MaxxForce and N-series population, NED is the tool.

Who NED is right for

Independent truck shops, fleets and mobile technicians servicing Navistar-engined Internationals: MaxxForce-era units, N9/N10/N13 trucks and A26 tractors. Those 2007–2017 trucks are still on the road in big numbers, and NED is the engine software that gives an independent shop the same fault detail, tests and parameters a dealer technician sees. If your yard is mixed, plan accordingly — Cummins power needs Cummins software, and S13 power needs SDS.

Getting started

You will find full details on the Navistar NED product page, and you can browse our other Navistar diagnostic tools — including NavKal and Diamond Logic Builder — from the same catalog. Every DiagTechPro purchase includes remote installation and setup over TeamViewer: we install NED on your laptop, get your RP1210 adapter drivers configured, and confirm the software is communicating before you ever plug into a truck.
