Bidirectional Controls and Active Diagnostic Tests

A bidirectional diagnostic function allows an application to request an action from a supported controller, instead of only displaying information. An active test uses that capability to help investigate a system's response. The available actions vary with the vehicle, controller, software release and the user's access.

These tests can help answer a specific diagnostic question. The technician may need to compare a commanded state with the response reported by the system or observed through the prescribed checks. Plan what the result would establish before requesting the test, rather than selecting functions simply because they appear in a menu.

Read the manufacturer's test procedure and prerequisites first. Some routines can change engine operation or activate components, so vehicle preparation, surroundings and technician supervision matter. A test that is suitable for one controller may not exist or operate the same way on another. Follow the actual procedure instead of copying assumptions from a different model.

Interpret the response in context. A successful command does not prove that the entire system is healthy, and an unsuccessful request does not automatically prove that a component is defective. The request may be unsupported or blocked by operating conditions or faults. Review the tool's message, relevant data and the OEM diagnostic path before deciding what to inspect next.

Document the question, supported test, observed response and subsequent checks. Keep the initial fault report and save any useful recording. After repair, complete the required verification under the appropriate conditions. Active tests are most useful when they add evidence to a structured diagnosis; they should not replace service information or become a trial-and-error sequence of commands.
